“If women are not able to go to work and conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality” : says SC upon Kolkata medic murder case

The Supreme Court of India heard the sou motu case of the
rape and murder of Kolkata RG College PG medic that led the whole nation to
stand in vigorous protest. The highest court said, if women are not safe at
their work places, “we’re denying them equality”.
About the murder of the doctor, the court proclaimed:
The SC court questioned Kolkata police about how thousands
of outsiders entered into the hospital premise at night on 14 August. The court
asked what was Kolkata Police doing at the specific hour when the mob destroyed
the hospital equipments, how can be they unaware of this.
The power of the government of WB should not weaken the
protesting rights of the doctors, lawyers and civil society as this is a time
of national catharsis.
The court fired upon Kolkata Police about why did the police
officials take 12 hours to lodge FIR about the incident and KP asked instead
what the hospital authorities were doing at the moment of crime.
Chief Justice Chandrachud said’ “if women are not able to go
to work and conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality.”
The SC further mentioned that “not a matter of a particular
offence, but something which affects the institution of health care pan- India.”
Solicitor general Tushar Mehta stated: “let West Bengal not be in a denial mode,
there’s complete failure of law and order in state.”
The apex court also censured the circulation of the identity
of the victim as it has disgraced the diseased dignity.
The supreme court has asked the CBI to submit the interim
repot of the case within 22nd August and the final report within 3
months. Besides, the accused Sanjoy Roy who is under CBI custody has been taken
under polygraph test. The apex court calls for hearing upon this case next on
22nd August. SC also ordered for proper facilities for doctors in their
work places.
